Discussion:
XMPP federation questions... clear up the mystery?

I may be completely misunderstanding the capabilities of XMPP
federation, so I wanted to post the question to the group here.

I have a client who is using Google Apps for Business right now. They
use Gmail, Gdocs, and of course Gtalk.

In this scenario, is there any value (or capability) in the IM/presence
features in SipX?

Initially, I don't see how there would be unless they're using SipX for
IM and not Google's XMPP servers. But, there might be something I am
missing... My experience with the built-in XMPP service is limited to
IM/presence in Bria and other softphones that support XMPP.

Thanks!

I think this is pretty easy to understand. If you turn on federation and
have the proper firewall rules to allow it, the user can set their
"alternate" IM address in the portal (***@gmail.com or whatever) and
have the "mybuddy" alerts sent to their google account via instant messages
(you received a fax, 1234567 called and didn't leave a voicemail). Another
example would be: using pidgin/polycom on the desktop logged into the sipx
im account via pidgin and adding other users (gtalk, etc.) see your phone
status. Use cases are different, varied, and everyone has their own
preferences. I gave an example on the WIKI in 2010...

Tony,

Thanks for the information... the "alternate IM" address is in the
Contact Information screen? I'll explore that, but it looks fraught with
complexity... :O

The pidgin route may work... I am a long time user of Pidgin (back when
it was still call Gaim), but I can't find anything in the UI about
setting up presence/status sharing. Can you point me to the right
document/right direction?

Thanks again!

if federation is turned on, dns records are there publicly and nat is
configured, there is nothing to it.

you simply setup the IM account on pidgin for sipx if the phone (ex:
polycom) supports it. the status is inherited/automatic).
Thanks again!

I admit i don't know much about this. I just read your doc now. Tony, let
me know if you tested 4.6 here and if there are any issues. DNS records
should be there.
